Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek assessed the development of Türkiye’s economy in recent years and highlighted the increase in per capita income. Şimşek said per capita income had risen from $3,616 to $18,040.
Türkiye’s Statistical Institute (TÜİK) data on gross domestic product for 2025 also confirm the figure of $18,040. Accordingly, Türkiye’s economy grew by 3.6 percent in 2025 compared with the previous year, while GDP at current prices reached 63 trillion 20.9 billion lira. The total size of the economy in dollar terms was approximately $1.6 trillion. GDP per capita was calculated at 712,200 lira and $18,040 at current prices.
The initial figure of $3,616 dates back to 2002. According to data published by the Ministry of Trade, Türkiye’s GDP stood at $238.7 billion in 2002 and rose to $1 trillion 596.3 billion in 2025. During the same period, per capita income increased from $3,616 to $18,040.
Şimşek had previously said, while assessing the 2025 growth figures, that reaching $1.6 trillion in national income and exceeding $18,000 in per capita income represented an important threshold for Türkiye. Minister Şimşek had also said that Türkiye was projected to have joined the group of high-income countries with this development.
Because GDP per capita is an average indicator calculated by dividing a country’s total economic output by its population, it does not directly represent individuals’ average salaries or their actual income. Therefore, the figure of $18,040 reflects the value of economic output per person, not citizens’ average annual earnings.
