Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon was detained by New York police during a protest near the United Nations against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Sarandon was among about 100 people taken into custody on September 24 for blocking traffic on First Avenue near 39th Street, a few blocks south of UN headquarters, ahead of Netanyahu’s address to the General Assembly. Actress Hannah Einbinder and comedian Caleb Hearon were also detained.
Police ordered the demonstrators to leave over loudspeakers. When some remained seated on the pavement chanting slogans against Netanyahu, officers pulled them from the group one by one, tied their hands with zip ties and escorted them to police buses.
The protest was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace and drew about 200 people wearing white T-shirts printed with slogans such as “Fund people not bombs,” “No war” and “Free Palestine.” Footage shows Sarandon, wearing a “Fund people not bombs” shirt, being led away by officers.
Sarandon, who won the Academy Award for best actress for “Dead Man Walking,” has been an outspoken critic of Israel’s war in Gaza.
