Texas Gov. Greg Abbott requested a review of a plan to install ablution areas at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), arguing that publicly owned airports cannot give preferential treatment to a particular religion.
Abbott also ordered a review of state grants awarded to the entities operating DFW and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston. Saying that existing grants could be canceled and future state support halted, Abbott referred the matter to the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration.
DFW had been considering adding a low-mounted washing fixture to each of the men's and women's restrooms in Terminal D. The airport said the project was intended to reduce wet floors, fall risks and damage to countertops caused by passengers washing their feet in standard sinks.
After public interest in the plan grew, DFW accelerated its review and announced that it had abandoned the project. Two similar fixtures installed at the airport in 2019 remain in place.
IAH in Houston also has an interfaith prayer room connected to an ablution area.
