U.S. President Donald Trump announced that comprehensive plans were ready for oil, natural gas and mineral exploration in Greenland.
In a statement on his Truth Social account, Trump said large-scale exploration activities were being prepared to begin on the Arctic island. Speaking as global energy prices remain high, Trump argued that Greenland has extensive and easily accessible oil resources.
Trump also said some experts believe the island has some of the world’s largest easily accessible oil reserves. However, he provided no information about the basis for those assessments or the details of the planned exploration activities.

Greenland highlighted in U.S. and European defense
Trump said Greenland’s location gives the United States time, visibility and a strategic advantage, and stated that the island would play a central role in defending the United States and Europe against future attacks. Trump also argued that future attacks against the United States could come through Greenland.
Trump said defense elements deployed on the island would be able to respond to unmanned aerial vehicles, missiles and other weapons.
Agreement expands U.S. military presence
Trump’s statement came after an agreement signed in September between Washington, Denmark and Greenland. The agreement provides for the expansion of the U.S. military presence on the world’s largest island, the establishment of new bases and an increase in missile defense capabilities.

Although Trump referred to Greenland as “our new Greenland,” the island remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. The agreement recognizes Denmark’s sovereignty and the right of the people of Greenland to determine their own future.
New licenses halted in 2021
Greenland stopped issuing new oil and natural gas exploration licenses in 2021 due to environmental and climate concerns. Licenses issued previously remain valid.
