US President Donald Trump announced that a special structure would be established to preserve his country's global position in artificial intelligence. Trump also said that a senior official responsible for artificial intelligence would be appointed.
Trump's plan for an AI force
Comparing artificial intelligence to the industrial revolution of the future or the internet age, Trump said the technology would be much larger and more influential. Trump also argued that artificial intelligence could account for 25% of US gross domestic product.
Claiming that the United States was ahead of every other country, including China, Trump said it would maintain this lead. Trump said the growth of the artificial intelligence sector should not be hindered in any way and stated that the sector would be supported.
Citing the Space Force, which he said he established during his first presidential term, Trump announced that work was under way to create a similar structure for artificial intelligence.
Disagreement over the pace of AI development
Calls are being made in the United States to slow the pace at which artificial intelligence models are developed and increase oversight of the technology, while the technological competition between China and the United States continues.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had proposed that companies in the sector slow the pace of model development to reduce the potential risks of artificial intelligence.
Trump rejected the proposal. Claiming that there was a conspiracy against artificial intelligence and data centers, Trump argued that only China would benefit from such a situation.
Accusation against Democrats
Trump also accused Democrats of trying to obstruct artificial intelligence efforts. He argued that issues including Russia's interference in US elections, impeachment proceedings, global warming and men's participation in women's sports had occupied the public agenda for years.
Trump alleged that the term global warming had been replaced with climate change to encompass broader doubts, and said Democrats were now directly targeting artificial intelligence.
