U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Iran would face retaliation after attacks targeted U.S. forces stationed in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
Trump said the United States would respond forcefully to the attacks. “We’re going to hit them hard. There will be a response,” he said.
U.S. defenses intercepted most of the attacks
Trump said U.S. air defense systems had intercepted most of the incoming fire. He added that U.S. forces allowed one missile to pass through their airspace after determining that it would not strike an important target.
Iran identified the targeted bases
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the King Hussein and Azraq air bases in Jordan had been targeted with ballistic missiles. It added that Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates had been targeted with explosive-laden drones.
The Revolutionary Guard said the attack was retaliation for the U.S. operation on Larak Island on Sunday, which aimed to prevent the laying of naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil transportation, emerged as the central area in the statement.
Trump remains skeptical of diplomatic progress
Trump said Tehran had requested talks but that he remained cautious about the prospect of diplomatic progress. He also said the impact of U.S. sanctions on Iran had begun to be felt strongly.
