Turkish-American lawyers in the U.S.: A state-by-state directory of 235 attorneys
Turkish-American lawyers practice across the United States, from immigration boutiques in New York to global law firms, federal agencies and law schools. Here is a state-by-state directory of 235 attorneys based on research by TurkofAmerica magazine.
From immigration boutiques in Queens to global law firms in Manhattan, federal agencies in Washington and law schools in the Midwest, Turkish-American lawyers have built a presence across the U.S. legal profession.
Research by TurkofAmerica, a magazine that has served the Turkish-American community since 2002, identified 235 lawyers practicing in 22 jurisdictions across the country. The largest concentrations are in New York, California and Washington, D.C., and the most common practice areas are immigration, business and international law.
Pioneers and prominent names
The research names Eliezer Kapuya, who began practicing in Los Angeles in 1975, as the most experienced lawyer on the list, followed by Aydın S. Çağınalp, who has practiced in New York since 1976 and is listed in Best Lawyers in America, and Melih Doğan, who has practiced in New York since 1979.
Cahit Akbulut is regarded as a pioneer among lawyers who earned a law degree in Türkiye before practicing in the U.S. About 20 lawyers on the list hold law degrees from both countries, among them Mine Gür, Mehmet Fırat Polat and Betül Ümit Dışkaya.
Lawyers on the list also held public roles at the time of the research: Jay Karahan as a prosecutor in Harris County, Texas, Elizabeth Münisoğlu as a commissioner at the Los Angeles Superior Court and Mehmet K. Konar-Steenberg as a dean at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Others work as in-house counsel at major companies such as IBM, BlackBerry, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, American Express, Morgan Stanley and Travelers, or as partners at large firms, including Barbaros Karaahmet, Demet Başar, Gülgün U. Mersereau and Berin S. Romagnolo.
The list also includes Türkiye-born Armenian, Greek, Jewish and Syriac professionals, as well as American lawyers who are married to Turks or have long served the Turkish-American community.
