The United States’ decision to extend the lifting of its arms supply embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus for another year has drawn a reaction from Türkiye. Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said the decision would further deepen the loss of trust between the two parties on the island of Cyprus.
The decision’s validity period was extended until September 30, 2027. Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said it fully shared the views set out in the statement issued by the Foreign Ministry of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on the matter.
The security of Turkish Cypriots will be protected
The Foreign Ministry of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus expressed deep regret over the extension of the decision to lift the embargo. The ministry argued that the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus was increasing pressure on Turkish Cypriots across the island and harming regional stability through intensive arms activities.
The statement stressed that steps that would deepen the loss of trust between the parties on the island of Cyprus should not be taken. Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry also said it would continue defending the legitimate rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people and ensuring their security under all circumstances.
The ministry said it would also resolutely continue efforts to ensure that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus reaches the position it deserves in the international arena.
