Algeria's National Independent Election Authority announced that the domestic turnout rate in the elections to determine members of the National People's Assembly (the lower house of parliament) was 20.79 percent.
The authority's Vice President Karim Halfan stated in a statement to official television that the recorded provisional turnout rate corresponded to approximately 5 million voters.
Decline from 2021 elections
In the previous National People's Assembly elections held in 2021, the turnout rate was 30 percent.
Overseas votes
Halfan said that the turnout of Algerian citizens abroad was 10.67 percent, and that voting had not yet been completed in some capitals like Washington due to the time difference.
When will the results be announced?
The election authority will announce all results, along with the parties and winning lists, after receiving the results report from the last municipality and the last polling station abroad. Halfan stressed that this process will take place in accordance with legal deadlines.
While the independent election authority announces provisional results, the Constitutional Court will announce the final results after ruling on appeals.
Voting process
Polls closed on Thursday evening in the country's 58 provinces. El-Nahar television broadcast footage showing that vote counting had begun in some provinces after the polls closed; however, no immediate official statement came from the election authority.
Voting began at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday and continued until 7:00 p.m. The election law gives the authority's president the power to extend voting by one hour, and this power was used to extend the period until 8:00 p.m.
The election authority had officially announced that domestic turnout was 11.24 percent as of 3:00 p.m. local time on Thursday.
Voting abroad
Algerians living abroad began voting last Saturday, and the process continued until Thursday.
Election background
More than 24 million voters were called to participate in the second parliamentary election held after the 2019 popular movement. The popular movement had resulted in the resignation of then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
The National People's Assembly has 407 seats, 12 of which are reserved to represent Algerians living abroad.
