China announced that the second round of the trade and investment consultation mechanism with the European Union (EU) will be held next autumn.
Chinese Ministry of Commerce Spokesperson He Yadong said at a press conference in Beijing that the second meeting will take place in autumn, but did not give a specific date. Yadong noted that this mechanism creates a new periodic dialogue platform for economic and trade exchanges between China and the EU.
The parties agreed to meet at the ministerial level once or twice a year under the mechanism.
The first meeting was held on June 9, 2026 in Brussels. The Chinese spokesperson emphasized that the meeting focused on three areas to ensure more balanced growth in bilateral trade, and that the aim was not to reduce trade but to maintain balance.
Increasing cooperation in new sectors such as artificial intelligence and green transformation, and better utilizing the potential in services trade were also on the agenda.
He Yadong said the two sides agreed to redefine their economic and trade relations as "major, stable and balanced trading partners." He stated that this consensus would improve the expectations of companies on both sides and bring more certainty and positive momentum to the Chinese, EU and global economies.
Trade disputes in the background
These developments are taking place against the backdrop of escalating trade disputes between the parties. Last May, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Lithuania signed a proposal calling on the European Commission to take stricter measures against what they described as "unfair trade practices," including tariffs and restrictions on imports from China.
According to Eurostat data, in 2025 the EU's imports from China amounted to approximately 559 billion euros, while its exports to China remained at 199 billion euros. Thus, the EU's trade deficit with China reached 360 billion euros.
