An AH-64 Apache attack helicopter operated by the U.S. Army from the Fort Hood military installation crashed into a field south of the city of Salado, Texas, on Wednesday. The crash occurred at 1:34 p.m. local time, approximately 800 meters from a residential area.
Cliff Coleman, public information officer for the Bell County Sheriff's Office, said the two people aboard the helicopter died at the scene following the impact. The helicopter did not hit any homes.

Grass fire prompts evacuation of residents
A large grass fire broke out after the crash. The fire remained uncontrolled Wednesday afternoon, with strong winds from the south fueling the flames.
Numerous firefighting crews were sent to the area to tackle the blaze. Authorities evacuated residents living along FM 2843 as a precaution.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and the Fort Hood Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an official investigation. Questions about the helicopter's flight path and the official military status of those who died were referred to military authorities.
