U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone on Tuesday with UAE National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, emphasizing the importance of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. State Department said the call covered regional security issues, including Lebanon. They also discussed maintaining coordination between the United States and the UAE to hold Iran and its terrorist proxies accountable for ongoing attacks.
UAE halts transactions with Iran
The UAE government suspended all commercial exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice on the same day.
The Abu Dhabi government said the decision was taken after announcing that Iran had fired two ballistic missiles toward the UAE.
Focus on the Strait of Hormuz
The freedom of navigation highlighted by Rubio during the call once again placed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy exports, at the center of the regional security agenda.

Tensions and disrupted talks
Tensions in the Middle East rose after the United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran in February. Tehran responded by carrying out attacks on regional countries that host U.S. forces, including the UAE.
In mid-June, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding brokered by Pakistan, aimed at ending the war and reaching a lasting peace agreement.
However, disagreements over the terms of the memorandum and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz led to the disruption of subsequent talks.
