U.S. President Trump answered reporters' questions after a presidential executive order signing ceremony at the Oval Office. Trump said negotiations with Iran were progressing well and that a deal could be signed soon.
Trump claimed that he did not think Iran could hold out much longer and that the war could end very soon. He also said gasoline prices would fall after the war ended.
Full agreement not reached on the Strait of Hormuz
Trump said he was closely following the negotiations with Iran and was also involved in the process. In response to a question about the date the agreement would be signed, he said the talks were progressing well.
Addressing assessments that an agreement with Tehran on the Strait of Hormuz was nearing completion, Trump said he could not say that full agreement had been reached yet. Trump said the process was ongoing and claimed that the United States controlled the strait through the blockade.
Trump also said Iran could fire on ships passing through the strait or that naval mines could come into contact with tankers.
Statement on U.S. weapons stocks
Trump also spoke about the Russia-Ukraine War and claimed that the Joe Biden administration had sent large quantities of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine at the time. He said the United States had supplied large amounts of weapons and ammunition not only to Ukraine but also to many other countries.
Trump said some of these weapons and ammunition could be reclaimed if needed. He said there was no problem meeting ammunition needs related to Iran and noted that stocks were replenished through daily supplies.
