Chinese President Xi Jinping said Latin America and the Caribbean’s status as a zone of peace should be preserved during a meeting with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa in Beijing on Tuesday.
Xi said the region’s countries should not face interference in their right to choose their cooperation partners independently, and that their paths to development and revitalization should not be disrupted.
China backs independent cooperation
Xi said China supports Latin American countries pursuing international cooperation in line with their own national interests and called for the preservation of regional peace and stability.
Xi said Beijing approaches its relations with Ecuador from a strategic and long-term perspective, adding that the two countries would work together to take their ties to new levels.
10th year of China-Ecuador partnership
Noboa’s visit coincides with the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Ecuador. The Ecuadorian president arrived in Beijing on Sunday for his first eight-day state visit to China.
China and Ecuador formally established diplomatic relations in January 1980. The current trade volume between the two countries stands at $17.33 billion.
