U.S. President Donald Trump published a map image on his social media account showing the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory. The strategic waterway was marked with the phrase “New U.S. Territory.”
The post came after Trump had previously said that he could declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory. At an event he attended on August 14, Trump said that the U.S. Navy was enforcing a full blockade of the strait.
After completely defeating Iran—which is being defeated very heavily—I will declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory shortly.
In another social media post, Trump also said that the United States had “full control” over the Strait of Hormuz and that Washington believed it could maintain that control.
Iran’s condition for reopening the strait
Iranian officials said that the Strait of Hormuz would not reopen unless U.S. intervention and the naval blockade were ended. The Tehran administration also demanded the implementation of the terms of the agreement signed with Washington on June 17.
