Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had presented several good proposals for ending the Russia-Ukraine war during their talks in Kyiv. Zelenskyy said it was not yet clear whether the proposals would be implemented.
Briefing reporters on Tuesday, Zelenskyy said, "I will speak openly: several ideas were genuinely very good and worth considering."
U.S. representatives' contacts in Kyiv and Moscow
Witkoff and Kushner met with Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Sunday. It was the first visit by the two U.S. representatives to Ukraine.
One day before traveling to Kyiv, the two representatives met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Zelenskyy argued that this diplomatic activity had strengthened both Ukraine's capacity on the battlefield and its negotiating position.
Ballistic packages to be discussed in meeting with Trump
Pointing to nighttime attacks on Ukraine, Zelenskyy said the country needed ballistic packages from the United States. Zelenskyy said Washington had detailed information about his country's needs and stated that he would raise the request during a planned meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in the latter part of September.
The Ukrainian leader said he hoped to achieve results from the meeting with Trump. Zelenskyy said the sides were moving toward a trilateral meeting format and announced that a meeting between European and U.S. advisers would be held in the near future.
Three countries proposed for trilateral talks
Zelenskyy said they would prepare for negotiations in a trilateral format after the meeting with Trump. He listed Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland among the countries that could host possible new talks.
Zelenskyy said energy and grain could be included on the agenda of the trilateral talks, adding that prisoner exchanges needed to be expanded and accelerated.
Zelenskyy said Kyiv was ready to seek an understanding with Moscow on grain exports and energy. He noted that both countries, not only Ukraine, needed to take steps in these areas.
