Gunfire broke out just before 8 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, next to Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, as crowds were leaving the Rattlers' homecoming game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Police said 11 people suffered gunshot wounds.
A twelfth person, the grandmother of one of the gunshot victims, was injured while fleeing the scene. Six of the injured are adults and six are juveniles, the youngest of them 11 years old. At least one victim is a FAMU student.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said three victims were seriously injured, one of them critically, while the other eight were in stable condition.
'An isolated incident'
Revell said preliminary information shows an altercation took place between individuals before the shooting, describing it as "an isolated incident between two or three individuals." No arrests had been announced as of Sunday morning, and police have not named a suspect.
"I stand before you tonight devastated," Revell told reporters early Sunday. "We hurt with you, and we will continue to get you the answers you so desperately want."
The chief said officers ran into the scene "still not knowing where the shooters were" and carried wounded people in their arms because the crowd blocked access. He urged people to clear the area so officers could reach the victims.
Campus alerts
FAMU sent a campus safety alert at 8:40 p.m. telling people to shelter in place and stay away from the stadium area. The university later said the shooting happened near campus on Perry Street, that the "campus remains safe," and offered condolences to the victims and their families.
Florida State University, about a mile away, also issued an emergency alert, saying no one from its community appeared to be involved and advising students and staff to stay indoors. Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey called the shooting a "truly horrific and heartbreaking tragedy."

The Rattlers had lost the homecoming game 31-28 hours earlier. The Tallahassee Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is leading the investigation and has asked witnesses or anyone with information to call 850-891-4200.
