Sen. Bernie Sanders accused Elon Musk and other billionaires of trying to buy the Nov. 3 midterm elections, calling them the most important midterms in modern American history in a video message to supporters.
"It's not just Elon Musk who is spending some $400 million to retain Republican control over the House and the Senate. You got it? $400 million from one guy," Sanders said. "But it's not just Musk. It's super PACs funded by the crypto people, by the AI companies, by AIPAC, and by other billionaire-funded super PACs."
Campaign finance reporting shows Musk has poured more than $360 million into the 2026 cycle so far, with the largest share going to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC backing Republican Senate candidates.
'Democracy over oligarchy'
Sanders said Musk now owns more wealth than the bottom 53% of American households and that the top 1% holds more wealth than the bottom 93%. "In the year 2026, we must choose democracy over oligarchy," he said, quoting Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis: "We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we cannot have both."
The Vermont independent also condemned what he described as racist attacks on Rep. Ilhan Omar and an Islamophobic campaign against Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan.
Sanders laid out an agenda he wants Democrats to adopt if they win Congress, including a wealth tax on billionaires, Medicare for All, a $20 minimum wage, a pause on advanced artificial intelligence and an end to U.S. funding for the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu.

Sanders, who recently campaigned in Florida, Texas, California and Maine, said he would head to Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin this weekend.
