Cristiano Ronaldo, one of football's biggest stars, said goodbye to the 2026 World Cup hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico in North America. After Portugal's elimination in the round of 16 with a 2-1 loss to Spain, he announced that this tournament was his last World Cup.
"The truth is this was my last World Cup participation," Ronaldo said, adding, "As for my future, I will think carefully to avoid making hasty decisions."
The 41-year-old legendary player set two international records by scoring 146 goals in 233 matches for Portugal. As the captain of Portugal, who won the 2016 European Championship, he also won the UEFA Nations League twice, in 2019 and 2025.
In an interview with French radio station Monte Carlo, Ronaldo said, "The biggest trophy I won with Portugal was Euro 2016, which for me is as important as the World Cup. That's why, after doing my best, I say goodbye to the World Cup with a clear conscience. Tomorrow is a new day and life will go on."
Ronaldo, the all-time top scorer in European Championship history with 14 goals, continues to play for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. "I won three trophies with Portugal. Before Cristiano, there were no trophies, so I am happy," he said.
Ronaldo shared his feelings, saying, "Of course I am sad to be eliminated from the World Cup this way, but as I said at Sunday's press conference, I did my best and I leave with a clear conscience."
The Portuguese star concluded, "A footballer's life is about winning and losing, and this life must go on."
