Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received Nobel laureate Aziz Sancar and his wife, Gwen Boles Sancar, at the Presidential Complex in Ankara. The meeting was closed to the press.
Born in Savur, in Türkiye's southeastern Mardin province, Sancar shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Tomas Lindahl and Paul Modrich for their work on DNA repair mechanisms. He has spent decades at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.
In recent weeks, Sancar has taken part in several programs in Türkiye. He delivered opening lectures for the 2026-2027 academic year at Mersin University and at Adana Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University, and visited the museum set up in the family mansion in Savur where he was born and raised.
Earlier this month, Türkiye's Ambassador to the United States Sedat Önal attended a conference of the Turkish American Scientists and Scholars Association (TASSA) hosted by the Sancars at the Sancar Turkish Community Center in Chapel Hill.
