Iran said it would respond after US Central Command announced that attacks had been carried out against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets in Iran. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said a residence in Sirik district had been targeted and that Iran would respond to the attacks “resolutely.”
Iranian authorities said a wedding ceremony was taking place at the residence. Baghaei said more than 50 men, women and children had been killed or injured in the attack, arguing that the incident was part of a broader wave of attacks that also covered Minab, Lamerd, Qeshm and other areas.
Iranian spokesman criticizes international organizations
Baghaei criticized governments and international organizations that remained silent or tried to justify the attacks. The Iranian spokesman said silence did not mean neutrality and warned that those who maintained this stance would not be able to avoid the consequences in the future.
Conflicting accounts of attacks in Iran
After the US Central Command announcement, explosion sounds were heard on Qeshm Island and in Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Chabahar and Konarak. Jiroft Airport in Kerman province was also said to have been targeted.
Hormozgan Deputy Governor Ahmad Nafisi had said in initial assessments that at least 4 people were killed and 50 were injured in the attack on the area where the wedding ceremony was taking place.
Accounts of the attack's toll differ. Iran, for its part, said the incident involved a residence where civilians were present and a wedding ceremony.
