The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on the United States fulfilling its commitments under the agreement reached in June and meeting Tehran’s conditions, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf said.
Speaking in parliament on Sunday, Ghalibaf said Iran had clearly conveyed its conditions to the other side through mediators. The Iranian official said it would not be possible to return to the previous position in the negotiations or reopen the Strait of Hormuz unless those conditions were met.
The Iranian Parliament speaker said Iran’s legitimate rights must be recognized and the United States must fulfill its commitments for the strait to reopen. Ghalibaf also said the other side’s path of deception and unilateral imposition had been closed off.
Strait closed after attacks
Tensions in the Middle East escalated after the United States and Israel carried out attacks on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded by carrying out attacks on countries hosting US military assets in the region.
Following these developments, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important waterways for oil and natural gas shipments.
June agreement could not be implemented
Washington and Tehran signed an agreement in June that provided for the cessation of military operations and arrangements to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.
However, disagreements over navigation and security arrangements in the strategic waterway made the agreement impossible to implement.
