Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the deployment of US missile systems in Norway had added to NATO’s chain of destabilizing actions.
Zakharova claimed that US systems in Europe capable of launching medium- and short-range missiles were intended to expand the capacity to carry out missile strikes deep inside Russian territory.
Capabilities of the systems in Norway
The Russian spokeswoman said the systems deployed in Norway were based on Mk-41 launch cells capable of firing missiles at land and sea targets. Zakharova also said that the systems could launch long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Zakharova argued that the deployment placed a significant part of European Russia, including Moscow, within range. She said the systems could form part of an offensive capability that NATO countries might use to reach strategic targets in Russia.
Zakharova warned that the US missile systems in Norway, along with their command and support infrastructure, would become a focus of Russia’s strategic deterrence forces. She said that if the possibility of armed conflict arose, this infrastructure would be taken into account in planning for the use of strike capabilities.
Moscow-Washington dialogue
Addressing strategic stability talks with the United States, Zakharova said the dialogue had not stopped but had been unilaterally interrupted by the administration of former US President Joe Biden.
Zakharova criticized the current US administration’s calls for multilateral negotiations that would also include China, saying that Beijing had repeatedly explained that it had strong reasons not to participate in talks at this stage.
Zakharova said the conditions necessary for productive and results-oriented strategic stability talks between Moscow and Washington had not been established. She argued that the deployment in Europe of US ground-based medium- and short-range missile systems threatening Russia would eliminate the remaining conditions for constructive discussions on strategic issues.
