NASA's Mars rover Perseverance reached a distance of 45.22 kilometers as it completed its 2,006th day on the planet, setting a new distance record on the surface.
Perseverance covered the 45.16-kilometer distance previously traveled by Opportunity in approximately 15 years within 5.5 years. More than 90 percent of the rover's total journey was completed without human intervention.

The rover used the AutoNav system, which detects obstacles and determines safe routes, to make this progress.
Perseverance's mission in Jezero Crater has been approved to continue until approximately the end of 2028. The rover is investigating the crater's geological history and conditions that may have been suitable for microbial life.

Perseverance also discovered features in a rock called Cheyava Falls that could offer clues to past microscopic life.
