One of neurosurgery’s most coveted honors has gone to a Turkish surgeon. The World Academy of Neurological Surgery (WANS) has named Prof. Dr. M. Necmettin Pamir the 2026 recipient of its Golden Neuron Award, which is presented every two years to neurosurgeons who have made major contributions to the development of the field.
Following in Yaşargil’s footsteps

The award’s past laureates include prominent neurosurgeons from the United States, Canada, Japan and Germany. Only one Turkish surgeon had received it before: Prof. Dr. M. Gazi Yaşargil, widely regarded as a founder of modern microneurosurgery, who won in 2007 after a long career that included years at the University of Arkansas in the U.S.
Pamir, who was born in Nicosia, is the founding rector of Istanbul’s Acıbadem University and head of the neurosurgery department at Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital.
"As physicians and scientists, we take pride in contributing to universal science and humanity. This award is also a validation of Turkish neurosurgery’s international success," he said.

A Turkish secretary general for the academy
In a second boost for Turkish neurosurgery, Prof. Dr. Koray Özduman, who chairs the neurosurgery department at Acıbadem University’s School of Medicine, was elected secretary general of WANS.
