The Consulate General of Türkiye in New York will hold a ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 10, to commemorate Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, on the 88th anniversary of his death. In an invitation posted on its official social media account, the consulate said all Turkish citizens are welcome to attend.
The ceremony will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the Turkish House, known in Turkish as Türkevi, at 821 United Nations Plaza in Manhattan, directly across First Avenue from United Nations headquarters. The consulate asks those planning to attend to confirm their participation in advance by emailing events.newyork@mfa.gov.tr.

Moment of silence, anthem and poems
The Nov. 10 ceremony at the Turkish House has become an annual gathering for New York's Turkish community. At the 2024 ceremony, hosted by Consul General Ahmet Yazal, sirens sounded at 9:05 a.m. for a moment of silence, followed by the Turkish national anthem, the İstiklal Marşı. Students from Turkish schools in New York recited poems, and diplomats from the Permanent Mission of Türkiye to the United Nations attended alongside citizens.
Speaking at that ceremony, Yazal said Nov. 10 is also an occasion to remember the great difficulties under which the Republic was founded under Atatürk's leadership. He encouraged the community to use each commemoration to reflect on what they had achieved since the last one and what they could contribute in their own fields before the next.
Why 9:05 matters
Atatürk died on Nov. 10, 1938, at 9:05 a.m. at Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul. Every year at that moment, life across Türkiye comes to a standstill as sirens wail and people stop for a minute of silence. Because daylight saving time ended in the U.S. on Nov. 1, Türkiye is now eight hours ahead of New York, so 9:05 a.m. in Istanbul falls at 1:05 a.m. on Nov. 10 on the East Coast and at 10:05 p.m. on Nov. 9 in California.

Opened in 2021, the 35-story Turkish House is home to both the Consulate General and Türkiye's Permanent Mission to the U.N., and it regularly hosts national day receptions, cultural programs and community events. Turkish missions in Boston, Ottawa and Montreal have also invited citizens to Nov. 10 ceremonies in their cities.
