The NYPD announced that a 12-year-old boy died from a stray bullet during a gunfight outside a market in the Bronx, and two others were injured. Commissioner Jessica Tisch called it "senseless gun violence."
The incident occurred around 5:00 pm on Saturday, local time, in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx, in front of a market at the corner of Walton Avenue and Elliot Place. A fight broke out among a group, and shots were fired.

Struck by bullet while biking past
Jacob Freytes, 12, was riding his bike past the market when he was struck in the shoulder. Badly wounded, the boy ran into the market to ask for help, then collapsed. He was taken to Lincoln Medical Center, but could not be saved despite all efforts.
Two other men, aged 34 and 25, were also shot. One was wounded in the foot, the other in the hip; their injuries were not life-threatening.
Suspect arrested outside his home
The NYPD announced the arrest of the suspect the following morning, Sunday. William Ferrer, 45, a Bronx resident, was taken into custody outside his home.
Ferrer faces charges of second-degree intentional murder, first-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, "No arrest can ease the pain of this indescribable loss, but the NYPD will continue to use every resource at its disposal to ensure justice for Jacob."

Son of a retired police officer
The deceased boy was the son of a retired New York police officer. Ferrer was arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court on Monday and ordered held without bail.
The deaths of children from stray bullets fired in street fights have sparked outrage across New York. The death of young Jacob Freytes has reignited debates over gun violence in the city.
