U.S. President Donald Trump said Medicaid, which provides health care to low-income people, will not cover gender-transition surgeries or hormone treatments for minors.
In a social media post, Trump said the decision was announced by Dr. Mehmet Oz, director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, on his instructions.
Trump reminded voters of the November midterm elections
Criticizing the procedures in strong terms, Trump said they would not pay for children to undergo these surgeries and treatments. He argued that the interventions cause irreversible harm to children's bodies.
Trump also said his administration would protect American children and asked voters to remember this position in the midterm elections in November.
