President Donald Trump said the United States is "very close" to securing a deal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, voicing an optimism he said he had previously kept to himself.
Asked by conservative commentator Benny Johnson about speculation that he might bring Russia and Ukraine together at the G20 summit at Trump National Doral in December, Trump said: "Well, I think we're getting very close to making a deal there and I haven't been saying that. I wasn't saying that initially. The hatred was tremendous between the two leaders, as you know. But I think there's a real good chance we're going to have that one worked out also. We're working on a lot of deals."
'He left it a mess'
Johnson also asked Trump to respond to former President Barack Obama, who, while campaigning for Democrats ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, said Trump had decorated the White House like "a Saddam Hussein Cheesecake Factory."
"Well, you know, he doesn't understand, I would say, quality. He doesn't understand cleanliness. He doesn't understand we don't want broken windows in the White House. We don't want broken moldings in the White House, on the exterior especially, and we've made it beautiful again," Trump said.
"The White House is a symbol of our country, a very big symbol. Maybe the number one symbol in a certain way. And we don't want a White House with cracked stone all over the place, with no paint, with missing paint, missing sidewalks, broken sidewalks, broken stone," he continued. "We've made it beautiful. It's more beautiful than it was in 1792 when it was built. And the people get that. He should have done something because he left it a mess."
Asked about the design of Obama's presidential library, Trump said: "Oh, that's not the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, but I wish him luck." He added: "I cannot understand when somebody goes out and hits you on fixing up, cleaning up, fixing up windows of the White House. There's something wrong. No, not a fan of his architectural taste."
Musk and CNN
Johnson noted that Elon Musk had invested $1 billion in Skydance, which owns CNN, making him technically a part owner of the network, and asked whether Musk should run CNN.
"Well, I like it certainly better than what we have right now," Trump said. "Although they did do a poll that I was way up on Abraham Lincoln, so I guess I can't be that angry. But he's a good man. He does good work."
Minaj as press secretary?
In the same interview, Trump said it would be "a good idea" for rapper Nicki Minaj to become the next White House press secretary. "I'll have to think about that," he said. The post has been vacant since Katie Zacharia stepped down after five days in the job.
