Türkiye and 11 other countries have issued a joint statement strongly condemning Israel’s airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in northwestern Syria.
The foreign ministers of Türkiye, Algeria, Indonesia, Jordan, Palestine, Qatar, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mauritania, Pakistan, Somalia and Saudi Arabia released the joint statement on August 21, expressing their opposition to the Israeli military action.
The ministers said the attacks represented a violation of Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity, warning that continued military escalation could further destabilize Syria and the wider region.
“A Highly Dangerous Escalation”
In their joint statement, the foreign ministers described the Israeli strikes on Abu al-Duhur as a “highly dangerous escalation.”
They stressed that continued Israeli attacks on Syrian territory threaten not only Syria’s security and stability but also broader regional peace.
The ministers called on Israel to comply with its obligations under international law and the United Nations Charter and to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
International Community Urged to Take Firm Action
The 12 countries also called on the international community to adopt a stronger position to stop Israeli attacks against Syria.
They urged the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to assume its legal and moral responsibilities and take concrete steps to prevent further escalation.
The statement also called for an end to Israel’s military presence on Syrian territory and for Israeli forces to withdraw from areas they have occupied.
Israel Carried Out Eight Airstrikes on Abu al-Duhur
Israeli warplanes targeted the Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in northwestern Syria on August 18.
According to reports, the facility was hit in eight separate airstrikes, damaging the runway and storage areas. No casualties were reported.
The attack prompted immediate condemnation from Türkiye, which described it as another violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Ankara also called on the international community to take a more decisive stance against Israeli military actions in Syria.
Washington Also Criticized the Strike
The Abu al-Duhur attack also drew criticism from Washington.
U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack described the Israeli strike as an “unnecessary escalation.”
The United States has been engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing tensions involving Türkiye, Syria and Israel from developing into a direct military confrontation.
Growing Diplomatic Pressure Over Israeli Actions in Syria
Several countries, including Türkiye, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, had already separately condemned the August 18 attack, describing it as a violation of Syrian sovereignty and international law.
The latest joint declaration brings those positions together in a broader diplomatic response.
With the statement, Türkiye, Algeria, Indonesia, Jordan, Palestine, Qatar, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mauritania, Pakistan, Somalia and Saudi Arabia have presented a unified position calling for an end to Israeli military operations against Syria and respect for the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
