Assessing the YPG’s decision to dissolve in terms of the goal of unity in Syria, U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack said the step strengthened the vision of a united country encompassing all Syrians.
Barrack said progress had been made under U.S. President Donald Trump’s ongoing Middle East Plan. He said Trump’s leadership had opened the way for the Syrian Democratic Forces to be systematically integrated into Syrian state institutions.
Recognition of Kurdish and roles in government
Barrack said the development had transformed the division of the past into a lasting partnership and that the Syrian people had regained the opportunity to shape their shared future.
Barrack supported the recognition of Kurdish in education and the assignment of significant positions within the Syrian government to Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed. He said this would show respect for the leadership and sacrifices of Kurdish partners and their contributions to regional stability.
Dissolution decision follows the January 29 agreement
The Syrian administration and the YPG reached an agreement on January 29 that envisaged a ceasefire and the group’s gradual integration into state institutions. Mazloum Abdi announced the YPG’s decision to dissolve at a press conference on Tuesday.
Barrack said former parties with differing views had reached a diplomatic agreement that would strengthen Syria’s sovereignty. He said this approach represented genuine integration rather than creating winners and losers.
The U.S. Special Envoy for Syria concluded his statement with the phrase, “one army, one government, one state.”
