Iran’s Persian Gulf and Strait Authority warned of new sanctions for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, saying vessels that fail to comply with the rules could face fines, detention or confiscation on subsequent transits.
The authority urged companies transporting cargo to or from the Persian Gulf to review the updated list of vessels accused of violations before chartering ships.
Cooperating ships will also be added to the list
Under the announcement, vessels cooperating with ships on the violations list will also be added to it. Ships involved in ship-to-ship cargo transfers, transshipment and similar activities will fall within the scope of the assessment.
Ships seeking removal from the list will be required to submit an official application explaining the grounds for their removal.
Iran-US talks stall over navigation dispute
In June, Iran and the United States signed an understanding brokered by Pakistan and Qatar to end the hostilities that began in February and continue negotiations toward a final agreement.
The talks stalled following disputes over the implementation of the understanding and navigation regulations in the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the critical routes for global oil and natural gas exports.
