The NYPD Muslim Officers Society held its annual awards ceremony in New York, bringing together about 700 guests, including Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, senior department leaders, community leaders from several Muslim-majority countries and representatives of civil society groups.
The evening opened with remarks by the society's president, Deputy Inspector Waheed Akhter, followed by a prayer from Imam Tahir Kukaj. Lt. Ali Hammutoğlu, an officer of Turkish origin who serves as the society's vice president, recited verses from the Quran.
Awards and scholarships
Akhter said the society remained committed to strengthening the organization through advocacy, mentorship, professional development and community engagement, and to making sure every member feels respected and supported.
Tisch thanked Akhter for his leadership and for bringing the community together, congratulated the evening's honorees, including the department's chiefs of patrol and detectives, and acknowledged the line-of-duty families in attendance. She also stressed the importance of unity and solidarity in a city of many cultures and faiths.
Officers recognized for their professional achievements received awards, and scholarships were presented to the children of members.
Representation in the department
The society works to strengthen professional solidarity among Muslim officers, increase their representation within the NYPD and build stronger ties between the department and the city's diverse communities.
