The Turkish flag was raised at city halls in Ottawa and Barrie, Ontario, on Oct. 29 as Turkish Canadians celebrated the 103rd anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye.
In the Canadian capital, Türkiye's Embassy held a morning ceremony at Ottawa City Hall with members of the Turkish-Canadian community. "As in previous years, October 29 has been proclaimed as the Turkish Republic Day by the Mayor of Ottawa," the embassy said.

A proclamation and speeches in Ottawa
Speakers addressed the guests from a podium bearing the city's crest before the flag was hoisted on the City Hall flagpole. The framed proclamation was then presented during the ceremony, which ended with a group photo of community members, many of them holding small Turkish and Canadian flags.

A first for Barrie
About 90 kilometers north of Toronto, the Turkish flag flew at Barrie City Hall for the first time. Türkiye's Consulate General in Toronto said the flag was raised "for the first time" in a ceremony attended by members of the local Turkish community, who posed in front of the building with Turkish and Canadian flags.

Barrie's ceremony adds to a growing list of Canadian cities marking Oct. 29 with Turkish community groups. Similar flag-raisings and receptions were held across North America this week, from Boston and Newton in Massachusetts to Washington, where Türkiye's Embassy hosted its Republic Day reception.
The Republic of Türkiye was proclaimed on Oct. 29, 1923, under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, its founder and first president.
