Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas, 82, was indicted in federal court on Thursday along with six others, including family members and close associates, in a marijuana corruption case unsealed less than two weeks before the midterm elections.
Prosecutors allege that Lucas used her position as chair of the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee to shield and benefit a marijuana enterprise linked to The Cannabis Outlet, a hemp THC retailer she co-owns in Portsmouth. The charges include racketeering conspiracy, marijuana distribution conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy and conspiracy to commit honest services fraud.

CNBC put the value of the alleged scheme at about $4.5 million, while FBI Director Kash Patel said illicit proceeds totaled about $5 million over roughly five years. Lucas surrendered to authorities.
Lucas denies the charges and has accused federal authorities of trying to silence her. The FBI searched her Portsmouth office and the cannabis business in May; the investigation began before the Trump administration.
