Arkansas' U.S. Senate race, long seen as safely Republican, has drawn more attention than usual this fall. A Talk Business & Politics-Hendrix College poll conducted Oct. 8-13 among 709 likely voters showed Sen. Tom Cotton at 50% and Democrat Hallie Shoffner at 41%, with Libertarian Jeff Wadlin and undecided voters each at 4.5%. The margin of error was plus or minus 5 points.
The result marks a shift from the same pollster's August survey, when Shoffner led Cotton 47.4% to 44%.

Shoffner and Wadlin have accused Cotton of neglecting the state and point to his refusal to debate them. Cotton and allied groups have far outraised and outspent their opponents; the conservative super PAC America One has spent more than $4.4 million on the race this year.
Most national forecasters still rate the race as solidly Republican, though the Almanac of American Politics shifted it from "safe" to "likely" Republican. Early voting began Oct. 19, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
