Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wrapped up the first bilateral official visit by a Canadian prime minister to Türkiye with a stop at Istanbul's historic Kariye Mosque.
Carney and his wife, Diana Fox Carney, toured the building on Saturday morning and viewed its Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. Carney's office said the stop was added to the program to highlight the importance Canada places on cultural heritage as a bridge between peoples and nations.
Built as a church in the Byzantine era, the structure was converted into a mosque in the early 16th century. It served as a museum for decades before a 2020 decision returned it to use as a mosque, and it reopened for worship in May 2024 after restoration.

In Ankara, Carney and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan elevated relations to a strategic partnership, unveiled a three-year action plan and agreed to launch free trade talks. Carney also invited Erdoğan to visit Canada.
