Former President Barack Obama sharply criticized President Donald Trump's war with Iran and ridiculed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Saturday at a rally in Cleveland, where he campaigned for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton and Senate candidate Sherrod Brown ten days before the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
Obama said Trump had chosen to start an unnecessary war that nobody had voted for, and argued that Iran did not have nuclear weapons because of the agreement his administration negotiated. "I didn't have to fire a missile to do it," he said. "I just had to engage in diplomacy."
"So, seven months later, how's that war going?" Obama asked, saying U.S. allies and military bases had been attacked, Americans had been killed and hundreds wounded, and U.S. missile stockpiles had been depleted, while Iran now holds effective leverage over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
He tied the conflict directly to rising costs. "This is the reason why the price of oil is up. Nobody disputes that," Obama said, pointing to higher diesel prices as well.
'These are not serious people'

Obama saved some of his sharpest lines for Hegseth. "He's very focused on important matters like the jaw lines and testosterone levels of our troops," he said, drawing laughter from the crowd. "How much time do you think this defense secretary spends looking at himself in the mirror in the morning?"
"These are not serious people," Obama added, arguing that Americans are paying the price for the administration's lack of seriousness.
The Cleveland rally came as Obama and Trump held dueling campaign events in battleground states on Saturday. The White House and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to the remarks.
'Saddam Hussein opened up a Cheesecake Factory'
Obama also mocked Trump's makeover of the White House, accusing him of covering it in gold. "He's got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened up a Cheesecake Factory," Obama said to laughter from the crowd.
