President Donald Trump said Sunday that Libya "cannot remain a corridor for illegal migration," in a Truth Social post that also praised the Libyan people and reaffirmed U.S. support for the North African country.
Trump described Libyans as "proud, resilient, hospitable, and deserving of peace and prosperity." He added: "We respect the Libyan people and the sacrifices that brave Libyans made fighting ISIS, the common enemy of both our peoples, but Libya cannot remain a corridor for illegal migration, and this must end now."
He said the two countries share a strong and enduring partnership in combating terrorism, built on their joint success in defeating ISIS in Libya, and that Washington supports the long-awaited unification of Libya and its institutions and a move toward national elections. "I want them to unite, take back their sovereignty, and have the peaceful, prosperous future they deserve!" he wrote.

Libya protests 'terror-infested' remark
The post came after Libya's Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. chargé d'affaires on Sunday to protest remarks Trump made a day earlier at a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia. Attacking Sen. Jon Ossoff, a Georgia Democrat who faces re-election on Nov. 3, Trump said Ossoff had sponsored a bill "to bring armies of migrants from terror-infested countries like Libya, Yemen, Haiti, Somalia," and repeated a vulgar term he had used for such countries during his first term.
The ministry called the remarks "offensive" and said it rejected any statements that "undermine the dignity of its people or diminish their standing." Libya's rival administrations in the east and west both denounced the comments, rejecting attempts to draw the country into "electoral debates."
Libya has been split between rival governments in Tripoli and the east for years and remains a major departure point for migrants trying to reach Europe across the Mediterranean.
