A Republican city council member featured in a $1 million super PAC ad calling Iowa Democratic congressional candidate Sarah Trone Garriott dangerous for children pleaded guilty in 2017 to child endangerment and drunken driving, The Washington Post reported, citing court records.
In the ad from the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with House Republican leadership, Dallas Center City Council member Shellie Flockhart, identified only as "Shellie," says: "When it comes to our kids, Sarah is just plain dangerous." The ad targets Trone Garriott's votes on transgender issues.
2017 arrest
According to the records, an officer found Flockhart's vehicle parked in the grass beside a highway in 2017 with two children, ages 8 and 11, inside. A preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol content of 0.254, more than three times Iowa's legal limit of 0.08. She pleaded guilty in Dallas County to misdemeanor charges of child endangerment and operating while intoxicated and was fined and placed on probation.
Flockhart has called the episode "a profound failure in judgment that endangered those I love most" and has said she is committed to a sobriety program.

'Desperate lies'
Trone Garriott, a state senator, is challenging Republican Rep. Zach Nunn in Iowa's 3rd Congressional District, which covers Des Moines and its suburbs. "It's disappointing, but not surprising, that Zach Nunn and his allies have resorted to desperate lies," campaign spokesperson Zach Schenkman said.
A CLF spokeswoman issued a statement criticizing the Post's reporting without addressing why Flockhart was included in the ad. Nunn's campaign did not respond to the Post's request for comment.
