The civilian nuclear cooperation agreement signed between Washington and Riyadh was sent by US President Donald Trump to Congress for review under US law.
An unnamed US official claimed that Saudi Arabia must still normalize relations with Israel for the agreement, signed on July 23, to take effect.
The agreement between the US and Saudi Arabia
According to a July 23 statement by the US Department of Energy, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud signed a peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement known as the “123 Agreement.”
The nuclear cooperation agreement was also accompanied by a bilateral safeguards agreement.
Trump’s normalization condition
Trump had previously said that the civilian nuclear agreement signed with Saudi Arabia would be conditional on Riyadh joining the “Abraham Accords.”
